Forget about the violent crime and overpriced hotels, visitors to South Africa for the FIFA World Cup have something else to worry about - marauding baboons.

Furry Felons in South Africa

Visitors to the 2010 World Cup may worry about South Africa's robbers and thieves. But, officials say, they should also worry about another type of bandit: baboons. On Tuesday, 29 baboons raided four cars on the outskirts of Cape Town, including the vehicle of this frightened woman.

Cheeky primates such as Fred, background, and Michael Jackson, foreground, have learned to open car doors and jump through windows in pursuit of tasty sandwiches and snacks. More are expected to do so next year when South Africa hosts the World Cup. "Tourism is going to go through the roof, and this equals exposure to naive people and rich pickings," said Justin O' Riain, head of the baboon research unit at the University of Cape Town.

Concerned residents of Simon's Town are taking steps to prevent baboons like this one from entering cars. They asked Monday for a crossing gate to be put on the road to the nearby Cape of Good Hope nature reserve. Cars would be stopped before entering baboon territory and given a brochure in their native language explaining why they should steer clear of the baboons. (Source: AP)
